How Early to Arrive at a China Train Station

Plan for the whole station process—not only the walk from the entrance to the platform.

Calculate my arrival time

Use a factor-based buffer

A familiar traveler at a smaller station can use a different buffer from a first-time visitor entering a large hub with a foreign passport and several suitcases. Start with a normal station process, then add time for unfamiliarity, staffed identity handling, luggage and peak demand.

What happens before boarding

  1. 1Reach the correct station and entrance.
  2. 2Complete baggage security.
  3. 3Pass identity or ticket access, potentially through a staffed channel.
  4. 4Find the correct waiting area and gate.
  5. 5Enter before ticket checking closes and reach the platform.

When to add extra time

Add extra margin for a first Chinese high-speed rail journey, a foreign passport, large luggage, a major station, weekend or holiday demand, or a fixed booking that would fail if the train is missed.
